The Session
A Play in One Act by William Fowkes
When love’s no longer beautiful, it may be time for therapy.
SYNOPSIS:
A man finally tells his therapist what’s really on his mind.
CHARACTERS:
PATIENT: A self-confident, charming man in his 40s. Dressed in a suit or coat and tie. Obviously in good shape.
THERAPIST: An intelligent, articulate, and reserved woman. Also in her 40s. Well dressed. Somewhat overweight.
SETTING:
A therapist’s office on the ground floor of a large pre-war apartment building on Central Park West in New York City. A sofa, stage right, faces a desk, stage left, with the desk chair pulled out to face the sofa. On the wall, stage left, or on the top of a table or bookcase, several framed diplomas are on display.
PERIOD:
Now—an afternoon.

The Session served as the basis for my full-length play, Couple of the Century.
Performance History:
The Session was a finalist at the Strawberry One-Act Festival Winter 2005 at the Bernie West Theatre, New York City, February 2005, where it made its world premiere with the following cast, in order of appearance:
Patient--Jerry Ferris; Therapist--Maria Volker. The play was directed by Wendy Peace and featured the song, "Our Love Is Beautiful," by Jack Woodbridge.
